Some have readily available, some will have to hunt for. Needs it by 1/15, have sent him some images today.

Edward Cain

Had a caller doing research for a book on higher education, interested in Cain who was a "social studies" political sci prof here for many years. Also in expansion of college in '50s, '60s, wanted images of expansion. Sent her email with some info on Cain, and link to Stylus in nyshistoricnewspapers.org, and some aerial photos.

HST512 intern

Ben Cherry, will be scanning faculty/staff bio stuff. Have him starting with '50s negatives of civil service and other staff, looking for bio info on them, to recognize some of the workers of that era.

HST512 intern

Jordan Ritchie, spent a couple hours with her this afternoon, showing her how to use the scanner, Photoshop, Adobe Pro etc. She is working on scanning and creating merged docs from Dedman's old notecards to Cherishing This Heritage. A lot of valuable information in there, that isn't easily available as is.

HST 412/512 interns

Am now getting some interns from Bruce Leslie's public history class. Not all of them come here, but some will. They each spend 30 hours on a project. One is going to digitize some of Dedman's notecards from his book for example, another use a Class of 1946 grads scrapbook to write about being a Brockport student then...

Women & housing

UB grad student, lives in this area, using archival sources to research the housing of women students in the 1950s. The dorm hours, rules for house mothers etc. He has been here a couple times now, and will be coming back next week. Has been using the yearbooks, Stylus, student hand books etc.

Odd Fellows

Students contacted me via email re the Odd Fellows fraternal group. Have emailed back suggesting some resources, e,g. the Brockport Republic online, (there was a lodge on Main Street,) America: History & Life etc., am meeting them next week.

1st Baptist historical records

Have been emailing with someone from 1st Baptist in town, re historical records they have and that they are trying to figure out what to do with, how to preserve etc. Have mentioned some options, e.g. that the Rochester Genealogical Society has a project where they scan church baptismal records etc. I did say I would have some interest in going through the records to research the Barriers and other black families here in 19th century, but that I didn't necessarily think I could take the records and house them here.

Old Stylus'

Email from someone who was cleaning out their parent's house and found some old Stylus' ca1926, did I want them. I answered that I would, and asked if either of the parents were grads, I could look them up, but needed names, the name of the person emailing didn't appear in my alumni list.

HST PublicHistory

Met last night with Bruce Leslie's public history class. Went over archival organization, practice, training, careers...

Archival careers

Spent a half hour or so just now with one of our history students discussing his interest in archival careers. Talked about education requirements, career opportunities, archival practice...

Update: he got back to me, is looking into an internship for the spring.

Photo permission

An email from a librarian at Providence College in RI looking for permission to use an old photo of a microfilm machine ca1960 in the library that I'd posted in the archives blog a couple years ago. Said sure, emailed her a higher res version of the image. Funny thing is that there were still a couple of those old units around when I started in 1990!

Genealogy

Fellow calling from Texas, Clark, researching an ancestor named Thomas (Spencer) Clark who was supposed to have been a doctor in the area in the 19th century. Not sure about that, there was a Dr. Horace Clark, but called him back and said I'll look as soon as I can. The caller was someone who is eldery and not using computers, going online, makes it harder to help.

Allan Berry

Contacted me re a project he has in mind, something to do with his role on the village museum board. I am on the BCM board with Allan. Am meeting him today.

Achival careers

Student interested in archive work as a career has contacted me, am setting up a meeting.

Scarborough pics

Dave Tyler wanted pics of Greg Scarborough for throwback Thursdays images. Sent him a couple 1958 shots I had scanned. Strange though, he'd found the pics in Portfolio, but couldn't download, will have to see why.

Brockport Archivist & Facebook

Have been on FB as "Brockport Archivist" for a little while now. There is a "Remembering Brockport" page where I connect with many who are alumni, emeriti, adult children or relatives of college people... I have more "friends" there than I do in my personal FB page!

Course descriptions

Haven't had many of these lately, but one just in, needed course descriptions for 4 course taken in early '80s. Scanned the pages from the catalogs, merged, emailed to him.

Brockport enrollments

Query from Mike Andriatch & Jeff Lashbrook re peak enrollments. Didn't have time to go thru everything, but noted that:

I can tell you that in the 1971-72 catalog it states that “enrollment in Sept. 1970 was 8,200 of whom 6,200 were undergrads… An enrollment of more than 10,400 is expected in Sept. 1971.”

In the 1981 Middle States the total student enrollment, undergrad and grad, was 7,300. The enrollment may well have spiked at around 12K in the early ‘70s.

Vick genealogy

A classmate of Roxanne J's from college asked her about researching an ancestor she thought went here ca 1910. I didn't find her as a grad, but did find a piece on her wedding, and ID'd two other relatives of same name who did graduate from here.

Stylus online!

Finally, after a year plus, the Stylus is finally online at nyshistoricnewspapers.org!!! It is there 1928-2014; that's what I had on microfilm that could easily be digitized. The earliest years were scanned by Mary Jo G. and are online at NY Heritage.

Public History class

Am meeting with Bruce Leslie's public history class again in a couple weeks, prepping for that, including updating list of possible projects - each student has to do a 30 hour project, and some will do it using college archives.

Anthony Conetta

All American wrestler '83, found one photo for athletics from when he played, still looking for one taken when he was inducted in our hall of fame in '98.

Brockport Cemetery

A girl who is working on that cemetery walk later this month was referred to me by Laura D. Am going to help her find some local history resources etc.

Vietnam War era

Girl doing paper on the book The Things They Carried stopped by, wanting "artifacts" or something from that era to use with her paper presentation. Offered to scan a few headlines from Stylus etc. and email to her, which seemed to take care of it.

Friday, October 9, 2015

Pat Coates - Burlingame

Emeriti Pat Coates emailed asking about a reference to the Burlingame family made in something I'd published, turned out she was referring to the Daily Eagle post re C. Bruce Lee where he mentions a local couple of that name who befriended him in 1940. Sent her a link to the transcript and audio on DC.

Tuesday, October 6, 2015

Wilbur Adriance

Contacted by Advancement - his daughter who recently died make a bequest to the college in his memory for a scholarship, and they wanted info on him. Found a little in a file in RG26, more in Stylus etc., and sent to them. Need to add him to the scholarship list - he taught health/pe in campus school 1949-1964.

Athletics photo request

For a girl who played field hockey in 2003-07. Found some and emailed to Kevin.

Digital Commons & Facebook

Working some on Digital Commons and posting on same to the "Remembering Brockport" group on Facebook, via my "Brockport Archivist" account. Generates a lot of notice and hits.

Health Science dept records

Eileen Daniels secretary emailed saying Daniels wanted to know what records I had on this dept. Answer is not much, a few scattered old annual reports etc. Pretty typical, never has been a mechanism where for example every department would submit a copy of the annual report to the archives...

Update: not Health Sci at all, she was trying to get space for an archive of material from a professional org Karen Schule-Williams is part of, both to house it and provide space for Karen to work on it! I can't really do that, not enough room etc., said so to Karen, and luckily she understood.

Irene D'Agostino

Widow of Coach D'Agostino, she is class of 1950. Has come to some of the Friends events, and invited me to visit and to give me some old yearbooks etc. Great visit, very informative. Among other things she gave me an original sheet on the camp in Ontario that students went to in the late '40s before Totem, a rooming contract with a house in town, lot's of good material. She is helping me date the color slide recruiting show too. I am hoping to meet her and some of her friends, also BSTC grads sometime this fall.

Fancher - Summer Arts

Wonderful recent donation - photos from Susan Malony (Kwas) '67. They are contact prints, photos of the construction of the stage at Fancher in the summer of 1965. I don't have anything like these, a most welcome addition! She is donating the photos, I'll scan and email her scans, and send thank you letter.

Update: this has led into an extended project, scanning the photos she sent, sending to her, communicating with her, lots of good info etc. Great possibility for a student project, to research history of theater groups and the Delta Psi Omega that was here for many years.

Joan Schockow

Long time women's soccer coach, is retiring, wants to come over, look for photos for use in a slideshow etc. Am meeting her Th.

Update: she came by, we looked through photos for a while, and she picked out a number for me to scan for her, which I have done, emailing her the scans.

Hartwell sign

Saw Beau Willis in cafe, he asked about the Hartwell historical sign. I think that is one the BCM did, and was talking about rehabbing. Am asking Norm. Beau and I talked a little also about the mall rehab, which from the power point he sent me should be very attractive, and it explicitly mentions "celebration of identity."

Stylus online!

It has been a long time, the mic for 1928-2014 was digitized last fall, but still not up at nyshistoricnewspapers.org. I asked Laura at RRLC this past June about it, she said the people doing this had been busy etc. Since now still not up, contacted her again, and she says that due to various delays it has taken this long, but, once they get new server up, it will be added and should be accessible in October.

When it is, do: Daily Eagle post, alert Stylus, change web page etc.

Presidential medallion

The medallion used in presidential inaugurations, who made it? From Julie Pruss in president's office. I think it's in Brown inaugural files, will have to look thru them.

Update: from the minutes of the May 4, 1966 meeting of the inaugural committee it was noted that "Mr. (Mirko) Pylyshenko has made the medallion... and is working now on the Great Seal."

John H. Kent

Interesting tip from Bill Andrews. He stopped by and asked what I knew about John Kent, and all I remembered was that he was a local photographer in 19th century, some of our carte de visite are by him. Apparently he was a much bigger deal than I'd realized, having a substantial photography career, and helping Eastman start Kodak!

Bill suggested I contact Eastman House, I did, and they replied that they do have maybe 200 hundred of his photos, including many Brockport people. Have made an appointment for in October to go see what they have. Need to assemble list of his photos I already have, bring camera etc.

Scott Bowerman '90

Played football here 1986-90, contacted athletics, they contacted me, and I responded telling them, and him, that I would look for photos, Stylus articles of when he played here.

Update: found a team shot, individual shot, and a Stylus article. He says thanks, and wonders if are any game shots. This is the challenge in those photo files: some sports events were done by Jim Dusen, and if I troll thru the semester notebook in question I might find them, but he didn't do all games. For a number of years a lot of games have been covered by free lancers, and I don't necessarily have their photos.

Drop in - Empire State

Drop in visitor, doing grad studies in Empire State in public history and archives - talked for a bit, invited him to email me, set up an appt, so we could go over things in more detail, he may want to do an internship.

Update: he has an MA from Brockport in creative writing, is taking grad classes at Empire State, thinking of getting into archives work. Have met with him twice now, each time for an hour or so, going over questions he has about archival organization and practice etc.

Rhett King '77

Star soccer goalie of mid-70s, his record recently broken, Athletics wanted some pics of him, found a couple, scanned and emailed to Kevin Stiner.

Gods/goddesses portrayed on stained glass windows

Good question this, and still not sure of all the answer. Some clearly represent a particular god or muse, e.g. Athena for Wisdom. I think others are more generic, but am pursuing as have time.

Village museum

Someone from village museum contacted me re Fannie Barrier, replied with some bio info and an image of her.

Dance photos

Mark S. emailed with the following, I am going to meet with him Th for a treasure hunt in Jim's negatives. The challenge in part as I told Mark is that Jim was an awesome photographer but not very good about detail on his captions and notes!

My name is Mark Scarborough and we talked during the summer about my getting some copies of photos from the Dance Department photos that you have.
I would like to see if you have Photos from The Brockport Resident Dance Company,  "Field of Light". "The Triptych", "Saga"
From the Dance Department any photos from the student spring and fall shows from 1980 to 1988, facility concerts from the same time frame.  I guess I would like to look at everything you have that is from 80 to 88.
I have a few photos from the Dance Dept. archives that I will bring with me.  Would I be able to come look at what you have this Wed or Thurs?  What times are best for you?  Where are you located on campus?

History higher ed

Student at UB's history of higher ed program stopped in yesterday, David, is interested in researching two areas, frosh hazing and women's rules in dorms. Showed some materials, talked about his research, he was here for a couple hours, will be back.

Brockport beats Army!

They're having a reunion of the 1955 soccer team that beat Army, and won the national championship this fall. Am preparing some materials for them - if filecity2 will cooperate - the lag issues on there are annoying...

Day of Giving

Bill Sachman, in alumni relations, emailed asking for some pics to use in ads for giving campaign as I did last year. Have sent him an assortment of images.

Monday, August 31, 2015

Presidential inaugurations

Julie Pruss, President's office,  looking for info re past inaugurations, themes, activities etc. Will assemble a packet of info and send to her.

19th c. black families

Interesting thread via Bill Andrews, someone suggesting that another black student was here same time as Fannie, her cousin, an Eva White? I did eventually see an Eva B. White registered for Sept. 1872, after Fannie. Eva is supposed to be a daughter of a sister of Fannie's mother Harriet who lived with them. There is a mention in Hendrick's book about a couple of relatives of Harriet's living with them, not much more. There seems to be some connection to the Page family as well.

Very good subject for a student intern, to research the black families of 19th century Brockport.

Local/Civil War history, archives

Am going to be meeting an Albion school student group 10/1to talk about archives, local history, Civil War...

Wednesday, August 26, 2015

Lennon - Daily Eagle posts

This is neat, I posted in Daily Eagle today about Prof. Lennon's old house being for sale, some bio on him etc., and Mark Noll from Earth Science emailed saying he was intrigued by Lennon's story, and wanted more info, that perhaps they could start commemorating him on his birthday or something along those lines.

Photo scanning guidelines

Kim Myers brought a prof around from Plattsburgh recently, curious about the book scanner etc. I talked to her a bit, and she has emailed me with some questions re scanning photo practices, dpi etc. Will share some basic suggestions with her, from my exp won thru trial and error!

2 photo requests

Two separate requests, one re a Dr Matters commemorated in a room in Alumni House, the other for a headshot of a football player from '83.

Special Olympics athlete

Got a query recently from someone whose husband was an athlete in the SO here in '79. He was from NY, and she was looking for photos. Somewhat to my surprise, I discovered that while we have files of photos for some various states and countries, we don't have one for NY. Recommended she contact the NY Special Olympics folks, gave her contact info.

"Gust's milk delivery"

Had a query re a photo of a local milkman labeled as above, ca1900, couldn't ID it. Then was told that the man was Gus Carges, so the label must have been "Gus'...." Then was able to find several articles in Brockport Republic and sent to Sarah Cedeno, new village historian.

Brandon Mills #42

Basketball player 2000-04, being inducted hall of fame, needed to look thru Jim D. photos to find some of Brandon. Found & emailed to his wife and Kevin Stiner.

Campus School Yearbooks

Fran Whited had asked me if I had some yearbooks for the campus school some time ago, thinking they had been given to us, but I had no recollection or record of such, hadn't known any were ever done. Then she found them at her home, and has shared them with me to scan; the originals need to go back to Mary Manitisas, the owner.

Significant acquisition, they are for '66, '67, and '68. Vivid capture of the active life in the campus school in its new home in Cooper. Will be adding to Digital Commons, post link in the Brockport Remembers on Facebook etc.

Thursday, August 6, 2015

Writers Forum - Philosophical Exchange

Kim was in here asking me about these, especially WF, digitizing filmed interviews, posting in Digital Commons, what do we have for permission records... Both these programs are quite significant in their respective fields, and are coming up on 50th anniversaries.

I spent some time discussing with Kim, and showing her, some of what I have, processed and unprocessed. Many options and possibilities, it is finding the time to do it, these sorts of things are tremendously time consuming.

Plaque Inventory

Ben finished his summer internship on the plaque inventory. Great job, documented over 100 memorial or commemorative plaques on campus. Gian Cervone said he will have a student this fall working on the campus interactive map, for me to send him the spreadsheet with plaques and locations, they will add to the map as they can. Plus tie in here with fall projects, faculty bio, scholarship bio projects am working with Mike Andriatch on etc.

Rush job - campus school year books

Fran Whited called, had found out about several campus school yearbooks from the '60s, needs to return to owner, but wanted to let me borrow them to scan for archives, later print for village museum... Very busy with the upcoming photo history event for Friends group, but Fran is a good friend to us, and a rare opportunity to add to the collection so will do it asap.

FODL event

Been very busy with prepping for next week's FODL event - scanning images, putting together several slideshows, one to serve as a presentation, researching history of photography here...

Thursday, July 30, 2015

C. Stuart Dube

Just passed away, Psych prof 1965-98. Didn't happen to have a file on him, but am now researching one. If I were to name one of my top priorities in archives, it would be to expand and refine my biography files.

BSLF/OSAD Reunion

Have been very busy working on the slideshow for this, finding, scanning, and adding images, researching the history... Pretty much set now, will meet with Linda Simmons, one of the organizers, tomorrow, and give her the file, the photo prints etc.

Jamie Beers Wilson has decals made up to seal the time capsule boxes, those are on the way.

Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor

Had a request from a staffer at the Nat'l Park Service, which is doing some sort of historical project re the canal. She needed some high quality images of the Collegiate Institute and Normal School, which I have supplied.

Brockport Foundation history

Had lunch with Jeanette Banker & Fran Whited yesterday, had fun, learned a lot, got some good leads for people to do oral history interviews, and was given a significant donation. It was 2 scrapbooks Peg Hare Browne put together that document earlier years of the Foundation and the Alumni Association, both of which she was very active in. Great addition to the archives.

Monday, July 13, 2015

Alumni donation

Karen Owen, who was active in alumni efforts at Alumni House for some years, has contacted me, has a number of materials she wants to donate. Will see her this week sometimes.

Athletes photos

Athletics is a regular seeker of photos and other records. Here is a request they just got. I have a set of CDs for the team for 2005, and Kevin is going to come over and see if the image she wants is in there.

Hello,

I was hoping you could help me with something. I have been selected to be inducted into the Athletics Hall of Fame. I am looking for a picture to put on my plaque. I have a picture of myself playing lacrosse that I scanned from the 2005 Brockport Women's Lacrosse Program. However, the quality of the picture is not great since it is scanned from the program. I was wondering if there was some way I could obtain a digital copy of the original picture. I have attached the scanned picture for your reference. I am not sure if Brockport Sports Information archives pictures, but I thought it was worth asking. I appreciate your help with this.

Thank you,

Angela Inzinna

Update: dug and dug, didn't find it, then Kevin contacted her, seemed it might actually have been 2004, and I looked again, found some great shots of her in a game against Geneseo, including the one she wanted:

Fabulous work! Angela is more than thrilled to have those pictures and she said to send her utmost appreciation! Great job!
