Soldiers Tower & Genealogy
A couple stopped in, descendants of the William Stevens who was the lead mason on the building of the Soldiers Tower on Owens Rd. He apparently died of a fall in the canal in Aug. 1935, found article in BR. Have book by Johnson too on tower.

Veterans day Committee
Noticed something in the Daily Eagle about a Veterans Day Committee looking for pictures etc. to commemorate Veterans Day. Contacted them re archives holdings, someone replied, is coming in Monday morning.
Followup, 11/7. Worked extensively with Erin Rickman, Transfer Coord., who is chairing the vets committee. She gave me a number of pics from various staff, both of themselves and family, others sent emails, I scanned pics, researched etc. and created a .ppt slideshow, "Veterans Among Us." She will use it and we are also going to run it on the lobby tv on Vets Day.

Arthur Ashe
From alumni affairs, asking on behalf of an alum, if we had a copy of Arthur Ashe's speech here as undergrad commencement speaker in 1990 (they had thought it was '91, but it was '90.) I didin't think so, and we don't, I presume the speeches are the intellectual property of the speaker, and not necessarily something we are given or collect. We do have the bulletins, and it was from those that I corrected the date, and added that he also received an honorary degree that year.

David Witcher / Whitcher
A phone call, genealogy, travling, said they had been at Seymour and that they had been told we had microfilm records of the Clarkson Community Church? Interested in fellow named above, early settler, had a son born here ca1821. I'll look, not sure I have ever seen anything like that though...

Sarah C. Smith
Interesting query, this woman was a student here ca1870 and then later went to Japan to found Hokusei Gakuen University in Sapporo, Japan. A Jim Allison there is looking for info on her school years etc. Here is a Wikipedia article on the school and its founding.
I found her in the student register, the only entry I see is for 9/23/1872, Sarah C. Smith, from Painted Post (quite far!), # months taught 4, Presbyterian.

"The Fact" newsletter
Dick Barnhart '61 emailed inquiring if any copies of this survived. We do have 3 issues. I am going to have Candace scan them, and have asked if he has any info on date, names of students who did it to please let me know. It's a spoof underground newsletter, ca1960.
