Part of the stimulating interaction between the Brockport Community Museum and the archives is some research some of the members are doing on health services in Brockport, including those of the college. An oral history interview was done with a woman who was a nurse here and more is forthcoming. I am keeping an eye out for material and have begun assembling information on Dr. Sansocie and others.

Have made some suggestions, will continue to pursue.

More interns
Been busy meeting with and overseeing the work of three interns from Leslie's Public History class still. They seem to be getting something out of it, and some good stuff for the archives. One particularly interesting discovery was the one student finding the archives for BSG that I had not known that they had over there; minutes of meetings from late '70s to date and a lot more. The students are putting together lists, finding guides etc.

James Edmunds, Civil War songster
Curious inquiry, via librarian at MCC whose husband is involved in Brighton's upcoming 200th. Apparently we have a thesis (#122, Gravelle, 1970) about a Civil War manuscript songbook written by Edmund's grandfather. James Edmunds was an English prof here 1937-1971, grew up in Brighton on family farm, had this manuscript. Looked at the thesis, reviewed Edmunds' bio file, will scan and send her some info from there suggesting leads to contact, eg Edmunds' children.

Hulburton, local history
Question from Marsha DeFillips, Orleans county village historian, re microfilm of Hulburton ME church records. Is interested in one individual particularly, will look for her when get a chance.
Mary Jane Holmes
The college archives includes several special collections related to local history, one of which has to do with Mary Jane Holmes. She was an popular and successful novelist in the 19th century, living and writing in her home on College Street here in Brockport. She was probably one of the most commercially successful women authors of her day. Her books may seem outdated or stilted to modern readers, but they resonated closely with the desires and issues many women experienced in her day.
Many of her novels, such as Tempest and Sunshine, were not only published as books, but serialized in magazines like the Ladies Home Journal, and even performed as stage shows on riverboats! You can easily find many of her novels online in Google books or in libraries.
Her husband, Daniel Holmes, attended our predecessor school, the Brockport Collegiate Institute, then University of Rochester and Yale Law School. He practiced as a lawyer in Brockport for many years, and was a staunch advocate for the college, serving on the board of trustees for over forty years!
The photograph here is not the usual image of Mary Jane Holmes found online and in contemporary sources, but captures her when younger. The image is from the collections in the Emily Knapp Museum in Brockport NY.

Hangover Breakfast, 1954
Request from advancement staff for a scan of a 5/4/1954 p1 Stylus article, "Hangover Breakfast," to share with an alum and prospective donor. Interesting article actually, a student written play, deemed to have too much sex by the one class adviser, but the adviser was overruled by Dean Rakov, who said they shouldn't censor student efforts.
Historic photos of Brockport & vicinity
Two different requests for this, one from a retired prof working on a book, and one from a member of the Town of Sweden bicentennial committee. Shared the glass plate photos, aerial shots etc. It really is helpful to people doing local history to have someone in my position available, since I am around much more than the part time, often elderly local historians, I have resources they don't etc. It's a nice community service thing and isn't a major factor in time for me generally.

Ongoing research on memorial tablet to Burlingame, Chriswell & Lowery
This bronze tablet, or plaque, was in the old Normal building, then Hartwell, then in the '90s rehab taken down, along with several WPA building dedication plaques. They ended up in the library, and recently Mary Jo Orzech took the initiative to get them to Duncan Chase in Art for restoration. The memorial names one is particularly interesting, and am researching the several persons.
One intriguing thread I need to pursue some other time is that at one point one of the dorms was named for Lowery, and later changed. When and why needs to be explored...

First day of classes in 1835
A couple questions from a staff person re when the school first opened. I emailed them back that:
I can tell you now that I have no idea; the school did open in 1835, as a private academy, but there is virtually no documentation from that time, no catalogs, records etc. All there is really is a mention or two in the local paper, references later by other people, that sort of thing. That initial school had a pretty sporadic existence, and was probably closed more than it was open.

In late 1841 some Brockport people got together and revived the school under a new name, that of the Brockport Collegiate Institute. From that point forward to the present there is an unbroken record, with extensive documentation, the catalogs, minutes of trustee's meetings and so on.
What are you working on? Maybe I can come up with something else.
They seem to be set for now.

Member of this honor society stopped by, inquiring about their original charter. I didn't have that, but was able to find some history of the society, especially in the 1949 Saga & Stylus. Richard Elton, home on Hartwell lawn?
Jeanette Banker, asking about address of Richard Elton who taught here ca1950-1960s. She thought he lived in one of the former homes on Hartwell lawn, but according to directories he lived on 44 Holley. Interesting question though, I am not sure how much, if anything, we have on the houses that once stood along Utica & Monroe in what is now campus lawn by Hartwell. I think they were acquired and demolished or moved ca1950 or so. Something to look into when have a chance...

Mary Smith book
Finished scanning of manuscript of Mary Smith (former Hamlin town historian) on the history of the "Triangle Tract," ie the tract that ran from LeRoy up thru Hamlin, present day towns of Hamlin, Clarkson, Sweden and part of Genesee Cty where LeRoy is. Norm Frisch took it back along with the jpgs of the individual pages, he is going to work to redo the book in publishable form, including redoing the various images. I will be helping with this as needed.
