Class of '63

Pep Johnson and company were back 12/10, spent several hours going over things, and left a big stack of materials for me to scan for use in slide shows etc.

Film footage

Someone contacted us looking for film/tv footage of his mother who gave a poetry reading here in 1982. I checked, and we didn't have it. The important point is that I double checked with Alex Alexandrov in TV, and there is no film archive, no film library of TV footage. She reminded me that many years ago I got the old stuff she had then, the old ECC college tour films etc. They apparently do not maintain an archive of footage they have shot.

Scan Civil War papers

Grad student referred to me for help scnaning some Civil War papers of a gr-grandfather. Am working with him re use of book scanner.

He came by, I scanned a set of letters/documents of his ancestors from his war service.

Stylus & Fiction

Sarah Cedeno, adjunct in English and short story author, uses items from local news as starting point for fiction. Came in to browse stories from the Stylus re Hartwell Hall, ghosts, renovation. Has also been using the Brockport Republic. Was handy to have the new book scanner, she could look at bound volumes, scanned items she wanted, merged into a file, she was very pleased.

Town of Sweden Historian

Kathy Getz called, someone she knows has an old ledger or diary of local history importance, and wanted to know about scanning it on the new machine. I said would be happy to make it available, and she is going to get back to me after the holidays.

Philosophy & Ethics of Sport Seminar

Cesar Torres asked about this some time ago, and I sent him an article from a campus newsletter. He is researching it more in depth now, as their 40th anniversary is coming up. The seminar or symposium started at Brockport in the early '70s, and is still active today. It was connected with the Philosphic Exchange in the early days. I need to look for more, and build a file on this.

Founding of Dept Business

Query re their founding date, for add to their web page. Rawle Farley was founding chair of Dept Economics, which first appeared in catalog of 1968. In 1980 the dept begins being listed as the Dept. of Business & Economics...

Hockey History

At initial planning meeting for class of '63 reunion today one member, Don Kwak, mentioned that hockey at Brockport started in his time here, and that he had given a file of articles and documents on it to the archives. I checked after they left, we do have it, and am having student assistant go thru it, id pages where we can get better copy from Stylus etc. and will then scan and post on DC.

ID these pictures

Picked out and scanned several pictures of unidenitified people from 4 different yearbooks and decades for Kerry Gotham in Alumni Affairs to use in alumni newsletter etc., a "do you know who this is..." sort of thing.

Johnson's, Class of '63

Contacted today by planning members of Class of '63 looking for assitance in scanning photos etc. in preparation for their 50th reunion next fall. Emailed back, will be working with them quite a bit I imagine.

Dimensions of a Liberal Education

Anne McPherson called about this 1980 Brockport publication. She is chairing the Gen Ed committee and thought it would be an interesting part of their discussions. I have multiple copies, and sent her one in the campus mail. This would be a good candidate for digital commons, would need to contact the various authors for permission.

Would I like a banner?

Lorraine from the Union, would I like a banner for the 2012 homecoming, has SERC on it..., or should they throw it out. Called back, will get from her. Avoid collecting a lot of 3D items, am not really set up for it and don't want to turn this into a museum, but things like this are good for displays etc.

Social Work course descriptions, 1971-72

Request for some social work course descriptions from 1971-1972. Came from dept. secretary, she is going to have person contact me directly.

Follow up note: was a little tricky - the dept only started in '71, catalog said course descriptions not yet ready, had to get them from subsequent catalog, and didn't exactly match what patron had said for courses, but was what we had.

Number of Grads, BCI & BSNS

A question from John Follaco, the PR person. Apparently the Bannner folks told him:

I only have access to what alumni records are in Banner.  As of August 2012, we had 87,665 alumni records - mailable/unmailable/living and deceased.  That only goes back to maybe the 1920s.  There are still about 90 years' worth of graduates before that that I don't have.

I added:

...if we are talking about people who graduated, who finished whatever the course of study was at the time, then I would say 250 for the Collegiate Institute, 2314 for the Normal, giving a total of 2564 grads for the period 1835-1917. I think this is a reasonably accurate ballpark figure.

I got the BSNS number from the 1917 semicentennial. For the BCI I looked at the list of BCI students we did once, names from the catalogs, and saw 900+ names, and made a rough estimate that about 250 of those actually "graduated," that is, finished a particular course of study. The records for the BCI are much sketchier. It is difficult to compare these very different institutions, but certainly the earlier editions of our school were far smaller than the college of the 1960s to date.

Women's Center Archives

Monique Rew fromt he Womens Center was here with two students and spent an hour going over basic archival practice, organization etc. Encouraged her to work with Kim Myers to set up a DC site for the center, which I believe she is going to do.

GAHWNY

Just to note, spent a good bit of time last week prepping for Saturday's "GAHWNY" (Government Appointed Historians of Western NY) conference, at Cooper Hall. I spoke on college archives and what they might have for local historians. Were about 50 people in attendance, and about 10 came back to the library for a tour.

Author - local history info

Writing a paper for MFA, based on local history, wants to meet, see the collection. Am setting up a time, advised further that BR is online, and are some good local history resources in DC. Also gave link to Brockport Museum site.

ice skating instructor, ca1980?

An alum emailed saying would like to make a small donation to the college in memory of the ice skating instructor he had in 1980; would I know who their name? Hmmmm, not really! Checked the Stylus index, rec & leisure files, PE dept listings in catalog, directories, no luck. I saw that PE back then offered 1 credit classes in things like ice skating, but I don't have schedules that would show who taught what. I don't know but that this would have been an adjunct either. Am looking, and contacted the PE secretary to see if they might have old staff rosters over there.

Stylus research

A new intern from Communications, working on list of Stylus staff, with an eye towards the centennial. Met today, will be working here off and on this fall.

Had a long phone call today from Wanda Hendricks who is finishing her biography of Fannie Barrier. Several things to research for her, and am looking forward to seeing her book!

Brad Schrieber asking if we had a collection of commencement speeches. No, not at all unfortunately. They are the property of the speaker, and as far as I know the college has not asked for or been given copies of the speeches over the years.

1955 helicopter crash

Was contacted by Jeanette Banker, passing on an eye witness account of a helicopter crash that occured here in 1955. Am looking for articles etc. to supply the alum who wrote the account.

Migrant Ed. archives

Sister Beverly called, she is retiring soon and has been working on their archival materials which we had discussed a year or so ago. There's going to be 10-15 boxes of materials, which will be here in the next few weeks.

1970s wrestler

Daughter inquiring about photos etc. of her father who was a wrestler here ca1975, for a birthday celebration for him. No pics, Saga is slim those years, so are other photos, but found several articles in Stylus, including one with a nice long mention of her Dad. Scanned & emailed to her.

John Welch research

Couple ladies from Michigan, here in Brockport to research their ancestor John Welch. Was the owner of local store etc., died 1903. Brockport Republic online, plat map books etc., plus referrals to some other local sources like Family History Center on Lake Rd...

For BASC office, Kelly, where they help plan commencement, looking for historical images of commencement to hang in their office area. I pulled together a number of images and she came over, looked thru them, I scanned them and she uploaded to her dropbox, so now has images to use.

Kendall - local hist., geneaology

Someone looking for info on an Orrin J. Smith, Kendall, member ME church there etc. in 1860s. Were interested in church records mic we have, but when I looked was minutes of quarterly conferences, not member rolls. Supplied some other info from 1869 directory, plat maps etc.

*** Later the same day, patron emailed me back thanking me - and mentioned that this Orrin Smith's son was Charles Smith who was a math prof here early 1900s! I just didn't make the connection, Smith being so common a name. Had some more info I could send him once I knew that.

Beer truck picture

A history grad, working on some Genesee beer co. museum project, remembered a slide in show I had in cafe a year ago that had a pic of Spring In, showing a Genny truck. Wanted a copy of the pic, emailed him a jpg.

Valedictorian for 1951

Question from alum affairs re who was valedictorian in 1951. The commencement programs in the '50s simply list honors students, those who are summa cum laude, magna... Replied with the names of the 3 students who were summa cum laude in 1951.

Photos of wedding on campus?

From a staff person in design; am checking, but don't recall ever seeing a mention of a wedding held on campus. No mention in Stylus index, will check other sources, am asking her for more info...

FOB Groundbreaking

Question re when was the groundbreaking for FOB (today's Brown.) From the construction records in RG20 work on the site appears to have begun in early 1973. Staff began moving into the building the summer of 1974. Doesn't appear to have been any ceremony or dedication.

Someone looking for info on Johnm Chesnut (English ca1950-1970.) Scanned some Stylus articles, a pic from yearbook, emailed to them.

Brockport Singers

This group ran from the late '60s to the early '80s when the music dept was retrenched. The faculty advisor was Cervone, and they are having a reunion. Cervone's son Gian contacted me asking about archival holdings - they are limited I am afraid.

Music for 1911 Old Home Week

Someone had stopped by while I was out, at some point MJG had gotten them a copy of the sheet music from Brockport's 1911 Old Home Week. I dug it out from the map cases for them, and then took it as a chance to use the new Bookeye scanner; scanned and posted them to the DC!

Department names

Kim was asking about a department name for a thesis done in '74; it was the earlier name for today's Communication dept. Many departments have changed names over the years; could be a useful project to do a name authority sort of list for them.

Class of '67

A member of class of '67 was let in archives by other staff, was looking for info for their 45th reunion. Gave him my card, said would scan materials for him.

Prometheus

Conservators working on the statute of Prometheus & campus architect were looking for photos of Prometheus under construction. Had many after finished, a few negatives showing a little of the fountain statues in construction, but not P. A quick skim thru Jim Dusen unproccessed photos didn't turn any up, altho may be some there somewhere. They did find some of finished statue that were of interest, scanned for them.

Mary Jane Holmes project

Met today with a student, Anne, who is going to do a 3 credit research project this summer on Mary Jane Holmes. The focus will be on her pulling together primary source material, e.g. trolling through the online Brockport Republic, searching the MJ Holmes room at the Brockport Museum etc.

Photos of PE faculty

Offered to supply some photos of PE faculty of previous generations to use in photo mosaic at new SERC. Darby Knox is interested, am putting some together.

Retrieved some info on him for Roxanne Johnston in Advancement; he is a donor she is working with. Interesting, I remember him a little from when first worked here, had forgotton that he had been in OSS in WWII.

Village historian visit

Jackie Morris and a friend stopped in, looking for info from 1850s. Unfortunately the Brockport Republic doesn't cover the years they needed. But was able to show them some other resources for future use, like the items in the Digital Commons.

History prof, Hull photo

Email from alum re some photo a history prof he had ca1971 had or showed them of Cordell Hull and Dept. State staff ca1940. Scanned and sent list of history profs from catalog, since he couldn't remember the name, and said we did not have the photo here, suggested the history section of the dept of state website.

Campus map, 1968

For a grad of '68, wanting to see a map of the campus from when they graduated. There isn't a yearly run of them, but had one ca1966 or '67 that I scanned and sent.

Early Ellsworth photos

From class of '62, looking ahead to their 50th reunion this fall, via Betsey S. They wanted to know if any early Ellsworth costumes were around, which I didn't know of, but I did find some ca1962 images of Ellsworth.

Homecoming

Ginny Campbell emailed, wanting to do a K'scope on homecoming. Was nice to be able to send her the link to the student paper on homecoming just added to the DC, and then will meet with her, need to check on what photos etc I have.

Followup, 4/18. Ginny & Sam Nicolosi came over, spent the morning going thru photos etc. Picked out a number of photos, flyers etc that I said I would scan for them. Sent some yesterday, will do rest today and tomorrow.

Brockport house history/images

One of anthro students working at the museum, wanting to look for photos of old houses in the village. Emailed her link to glass plate photos, and text of Hasting's book, as well as a chapter from Elwell.

Betsey Standish in alumni affairs wanted photo of Brautigan that ran in 1994 K'scope. I have Jim D's photos now, wasn't in the '94 volume of negatives, but it was in the A-Z list of faculty. Scanned and sent to her as a .tif & a .jpg.

Student researching history of Stylus emailed, asking about a listing of editors of the paper. Mary Jo G. had put together a list luckily, covering 1914-2005. Emailed list, student will likely come in for some other things.

Brockport athletic history

Interesting, a prof from Northern Ill. Univ. researching SUNY schools and the role athletics and sports in the played in the development of the college, building alum loyalty, the development away from being a teacher's college etc. in the 1945-1970 period.

Will  need to look a little, see what we have, he would like to arrange a visit.

West Sweden & Sweden Center churches

Norm Frisch, local history project, history of the hamlets and their churches. I mentioned the Brockport Republic site, the Elwell book, and discussed options for actual records from those churches. Will look for images in the glass plate negatives.

Stylus Centennial

Lacey Lee from the Stylus was here Friday, beginning research on the history of the Stylus, which will have its centennial May 2014. Showed her folder of clippings, let her look at old Normalias, Stylus etc. This will be an ongoing research.

Football roster for '64, '70, 1972

Went to clippings file that was sent over from athletics while MJG was doing archives. Much of it is clippings from fall Stylus, but some actual typewritten rosters too. Not a complete set.

College Facebook page - timeline

Dave Tyler, the webwriter, wanting images to add to the new time line he is creating for the college's FaceBook page. Called to clarify, will send him some jpgs etc to start.

Continuing to add both collections and content to DC; latest is the "Historical Photos of Faculty" collection.

Nursing caps

Interesting detail here on nursing caps, a grad from '79 looking for a pic of them in the caps; a quick look in yearbook didn't reveal anything, but will look more closely - also look at Dusen photos from that year. If I find one there should let Jim know!

Follow up - more searching by student assistant Candace turned up a page of photo negatives from 1981 of a nursing "capping" ceremony. Scanned and sent several to the alum, who was very pleased to get them.

I graduated as Carleen A Bedell with a BSN from SUNY Brockport in 1979 and am looking for photos of our nursing caps from yearbooks from 78 or 79. I have asked the School of Nursing and Kay's Caps to no avail. Would you be willing to send me a photo of our cap? As a Junior I think we wore 1 thin green stripe vertically on the back edge of the cuff. As a Senior I think we added a gold stripe next to it. Then when we were ready to graduate, we switched to a thick green velvet stripe applied horizontally near the top edge of the entire cuff. Any help would be greatly appreciated. At my current hospital (Tucson Medical Center) we wear whites and caps (if we have them) for Nurses' Week ceremonies.

Womens Center

Continuing to work with Karen O'Toole and student Brittney Rowe on the history of the womens center, scanned photo negs from Dusen collection, sent to them, printed some out for them, scanned pdf's of Stylus articles etc. which they came and got today...

Randall - family history

Caller left message, then called again, wanting info on some individuals named Randall who went here in 19th century. Asked her to email me and said would get back as soon as I could - genealogists do get awful persistant, and I do have other things to do. But will check for her when I can...

Women's Center history

Have been contacted by some students helping with the Women's Center 15th anniversary (it was started in '97.) We have some flyers and newsletters of theirs, and also Stylus articles are available and may be some photos in the Jim Dusen collection. Am meeting with them today.

Query re birth records, 1833

Searched for a birth notice in Brockport paper of 1833, did not find a notice for a Lucius Clark.

Gay Alliance Genesee Valley

Had posted in archives blog re Brockport's Gay Freedom League, which led to a contact from the Gay Alliance, sharing info about a local gay paper that has been digitized, and seeking some advice re archiving etc. Evelyn Bailey from the Alliance came out here 2/1/12.

Titles of a section of the school and the school itself

 A query as to the title of a section of the school, and the school itself: "As for your questions, I took 1975 as the mid-point, and at that time the college was divided into several "Faculties," e.g. the "Faculty of Physical Education and Recreation," of which Warren Fraleigh was dean. At that time the college's official name was: "State University of New York College at Brockport."

Family info - transcripts

Came back from lunch, someone here looking for info on their dad who attended the school in 1931-32, but did not graduate. Pat M. had helped them find the Saga for that year, and in the 1890s-1940s transcripts I located his father's record for that year. Am going to scan and email to the patron; this is in preparation for what would have been his father's 100th birthday!

As an aside, on transcripts: I have several boxes of transcripts from the 1890s to the 1940s, I was told that in Banner they have student records going back to the 1940s or a little earlier, so maybe some overlap, but the oldest ones are definitely here.

1983 Commencement speaker

Question forwarded by Bill Sachman at Alumni Affairs, alum wanting to know who speaker was at '83 commencement - the answer is that the primary speaker at the 1983 commencement was Shirley Chisholm, the recently retired Congresswoman; she was the first black woman elected to Congress in 1968, from NY City. She was both the speaker and was here to receive an honorary doctorate. There is a little information on her speech in the Summer '83 AlumNews if the inquirer is interested.

Field House - town park

From local historian, research for a historical marker on path at town park on Redman Rd - when did town get the land from the college, when was field house moved there... We have pictures of field house, articles from the Stylus and the Brockport Post that mention when the field house was moved ('71) and when the town was given the land ('99). The 156 acre tract across Redman was originally purchased in 1970.
